Ancient Greek OCR on OS X

Ancient Greek OCR is easiest to use on Mac OS X with the free software VietOCR application, with the Homebrew Tesseract package. Below are step by step instructions to install and set it up, and use it, for Ancient Greek OCR.

Installing VietOCR for Ancient Greek OCR

1. Install Homebrew using the method recommended on their website, by pasting the install line into Terminal and pressing Enter.
2. Install the Tesseract package with Homebrew, by entering the command

   brew install tesseract

   into a terminal window and pressing Enter.
3. Download VietOCR from the VietOCR website.
4. Open VietOCR by double-clicking on VietOCR.jar in the VietOCR3 folder in your Downloads folder.

   If you get an "unidentified developer" error, click OK, then go to Apple -> System Preferences -> Security & Privacy, and click "Open Anyway".

   
5. In VietOCR open Preferences, set the location for Tesseract to /usr/local/bin, and restart the program.
6. Download the Ancient Greek OCR training from the download section of the main webpage.
7. Copy the Ancient Greek OCR training file (grc.traineddata) into the /usr/local/share/tessdata folder, by entering this command in a terminal window:

   mv Downloads/grc.traineddata /usr/local/share/tessdata/

   

You can now open VietOCR with Ancient Greek OCR!

How to use VietOCR

1. Open VietOCR by double-clicking on ViewOCR.jar.
2. Set the language to Ancient Greek in the OCR Language menu.
3. Click the folder icon at the top left of the window to choose a file, and once it has opened then click "OCR"
