Ancient Greek OCR on OS X

Ancient Greek OCR is easiest to use on Mac OS X with the free software VietOCR application, with the Homebrew Tesseract package. Below are step by step instructions to install and set it up, and use it, for Ancient Greek OCR.

Installing VietOCR for Ancient Greek OCR

  1. Install Homebrew using the method recommended on their website, by pasting the install line into Terminal and pressing Enter. Homebrew screenshot Homebrew screenshot
  2. Install the Tesseract package with Homebrew, by entering the command
    brew install tesseract

  3. Download VietOCR from the VietOCR website. VietOCR screenshot
  4. Open VietOCR by double-clicking on VietOCR.jar in the VietOCR3 folder in your Downloads folder. VietOCR screenshot

    If you get an "unidentified developer" error, click OK, then go to Apple -> System Preferences -> Security & Privacy, and click "Open Anyway".

  6. Download the Ancient Greek OCR training from the download section of the main webpage. VietOCR screenshot
  7. Copy the Ancient Greek OCR training file (grc.traineddata) into the /usr/local/share/tessdata folder, by entering this command in a terminal window:
    mv Downloads/grc.traineddata /usr/local/share/tessdata/

You can now open VietOCR with Ancient Greek OCR!

How to use VietOCR
